Among the changes for the ’66 Mustang were: additional color options, a new instrument cluster, a new redesigned grille pattern, new styled wheels, revised side scoops that included chrome trim and three wind-splits, and an automatic transmission option for high performance V-8 models.

Ford also released a few special edition Mustangs in 1966. Due to the overwhelming demand for the 289ci V-8 engine that Ford was unable to produce enough of, a limited-edition Sprint 200 Mustang package was released. The Sprint 200 model used the six-cylinder 200ci engine, special wire wheel covers, side accent pinstripe and rocker panel moulding with the side scoop chrome trim removed, center console, and chrome oil-filler cap and air cleaner with a special air cleaner decal that said “Mustang Powered Sprint 200″.
