1964 Ford Mustang

1964 Ford Mustang

The first generation of the Ford Mustang started in 1964. The design was originally based around the Ford Falcon car. The Mustang revealed on April 17th 1964, making the release too late to be classified as a 1964 year car, and too early to be a 1965 – the result was known as a “1964 1/2″.

Standing 4 feet 3 inches tall with a wheel base of 108 inches, the Ford Mustang sits low compared to most cars. Overall body size is 181.6″ length by 68″ wide; this body size fit 5 passengers.

Parts for the Mustangs chassis, suspension, and drivetrain, were used from the Ford Falcon and Ford Fairlane in the creation of the Ford Mustang. The car was designed on a Unibody frame, which was also used on the Falcon.

The 1964 Ford Mustang was meant to be a “sporty styled” performance car under the price of $2500. The ‘64 Mustang was offered in three body styles: The hardtop, convertible, and the fastback; with the popularity of the body styles in that order also.

Ford offered four different engine sizes and displacements:

  • 170ci six cylinder engine creating 101-hp
  • 260ci V-8 engine with 164-hp
  • 289ci V-8 engine at 210-hp
  • 289ci V-8 High performance engine rated at 271-hp

Mustang transmissions had three options: a 3-speed manual which was standard with the 170ci and 260ci engines, 4-speed manual available to all engines except the 260ci, or an automatic transmission optional to all engines besides the 289ci High performance engine.

The Mustang boasted a bunch of standard features which would normally be unavailable or upgrades for most other vehicles. Included in the luxury features were: deep bucket seats made of foam, a padded instrument panel, color vinyl interior, wheel covers, nylon carpeting molded, and a deep dish steering wheel with metal horn arms.

Interior Mustang features included: sun visors, arm rests, a cigarette lighter, cabin heater, front safety belts, glove compartment and courtesy lights. Exterior features included: bumper with guards, curved side glass, drip moldings, and windshield wipers.

Extra options were made to customize the Mustang to fit your needs; Power brakes, steering, and convertible top; AM radio, air conditioning, tinted windshield and glass, power windshield wipers and washer, floor mounted console, sun visors with padding, vinyl hardtop, retractable safety belts, deluxe wheel covers, wire wheel covers, Rally-Pac including tachometer and clock, upgraded handling package with heavy duty shocks and springs, stabilizer bar for the front, limited slip differential, 14″ tires, 15″ sport tires, and a heavy duty battery.
